Book Review - Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovith

Rivers of London (Rivers of London, #1)Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Rivers of London is a wonderful combination of an absorbing crime novel with fantasy elements. Peter Grant is a probationary Police Officer who is guarding a police cordon one night when he is approached by a witness who also happens to be a ghost. The story develops as Peter joins a specialist unit of the Met which deals in supernatural and magical crimes (so specialist that there is only one other Officer in it) as an apprentice wizard. As people continue to be murdered in the West End so Peter must develop his new skills in order to catch and stop the killer.

I'm not a lover of books which might be considered as belonging to the more traditional fantasy genre, but this is just the right blend of the unusual and the realistic. Throw in some great descriptions of London (I felt like I was practically walking and driving round the streets with the characters) and this is a real treat. The only slight criticisms that I'd make are that there are a number of loose ends left at the end but I'm sure this will be cleared up by the continuation of the series.

What I'm Reading Wednesday

I am re-reading an old favourite book right now - Rivers Of London by Ben Aaronovitch.

It's the first in the series of urban fantasy police procedural novels featuring Police Constable and apprentice wizard, Peter Grant.

The novel centres around the adventures of Peter Grant, a young officer in the Metropolitan Police; who, following an unexpected encounter with a ghost, is recruited into the small branch of the Met that deals with magic and the supernatural.

Peter Grant, having become the first English apprentice wizard in over seventy years, must immediately deal with two different but ultimately inter-related cases. In one he must find what is possessing ordinary people and turning them into vicious killers, and in the second he must broker a peace between the two warring gods of the River Thames and their respective families

I've almost finished reading it and I'm planning on picking straight up with the second book in the series next, Moon Over Soho

Tune Tuesday

This was supposed to have been a Music Monday post, but I didn't come online last night so I'm posting it as a Tune Tuesday instead!

I love Bryan Adams' music. I know it's not cool too, and I know I'm too young. It's my dad's fault. Pretty much all my taste in music/movies/tv/books has come from my dad. I've always been a complete Daddy's Girl. Anything he did, I did and it turns out as I've grown older, I actually enjoy it for itself, not just because dad does.

I like most music but nearly always come back to... I don't know what you'd call it, I'm terrible with genres. 80s/90s soft rock? Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Phil Collins, Goo Goo Dolls, that kind of thing.

And sci-fi will always be my go-to genre of films/tv as well. Dad introduced me to the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Buffy. I love 90s sci-fi movies like Independence Day, Stargate, Men In Black, The Faculty, The Matrix, 12 Monkeys, Galaxy Quest, Jurassic Park. My dad is also a comic book fan and I remember him taking me to see Iron Man in the cinema when I was 13 and it blew me away. I think it changed my life. Marvel is still my main obsession and we will chat about the movies and the characters for hours, we go to midnight showings when we can.

What Happened to James Spader?

James Spader has not aged well, has he?

I watched Stargate yesterday and he's super cute in that (I also utterly love Daniel Jackson but that's a different matter entirely) and he was in a few other things in the 1990s. I also have to remind myself that Stargate came out before I was born and was A Long Time Ago and people change and stuff.

But, I looked him up yesterday as, other than the voice of Ultron, I didn't know what he'd been doing and I was curious because he was cute and stuff. And then I amused myself because Kurt Russell is also in Marvel as Ego in GOTG2... At this point, who isn't in the MCU? Can you imagine what their payroll budget must have been like for Infinity War and Endgame? I mean, it's not like Disney can't afford that but still.

OK wow, I went off on a tangent there. Where was I going?

Right. James Spader. Got old and kinda fat and bald. OK sure the guy's like really old at this point but there's still plenty of celebrities who are really old but don't LOOK it - like George Clooney or Johnny Depp or Robert Downey Jr, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Sandra Bullock, Colin Firth etc

But James Spader went from which gives me hearteyes to... well

Although I will say that new show of his, The Blacklist, sounds pretty good.
Raymond "Red" Reddington, one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives, surrenders in person at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He claims that he and the FBI have the same interests: bringing down dangerous criminals and terrorists. In the last two decades, he's made a list of criminals and terrorists that matter the most but the FBI cannot find because it does not know they exist. Reddington calls this "The Blacklist".
I might have to see if it's available over here.

Friday Five on a Saturday night

[community profile] thefridayfive for 13 September 2019
1. What would you do if you won the lottery? I am assuming here we're talking the jackpot - and I'm going to play pretend that it's the Euromillions and it's been rolled over a few times so I'm lapping it up, ok?

First things first, I will pay off my student loans. I will be able to get my Masters. I will look into setting up some kind of scholarship fund. I will buy/decorate/furnish a property for myself - although I am as yet undecided on the type of property. I will buy myself a new car - again, undecided on what type. I will pay off my parent's mortgage, buy them a new car and send them on holiday. I will travel to my hearts desire and see the world. And hopefully never have to work, have time to do all the reading and watching TV I could possibly want.

I feel like I should be less selfish and use the money to Do Good - and I probably would but don't know what/where - but right now, I'm just dreaming

2. What era do you wish you had lived in? For the most part, climate and political emergencies aside, I really like this one. I can't imagine not having the technology I have now!

Ugh, I know that makes me sound super Gen Z but there it is

3. What kind of robot would you want? A Roomba who also does the dishes.

4. What would you outsource if you could? Washing dishes.

My answers are getting shorter. Is my next answer going to be just one word?

5. What superpower do you wish you had? The power to heal.

Scary Intro Post

Hello Dreamwidth,

I'm Evie and this is my shiny new blog account. I had forgotten how daunting the 'post entry' page can be before you start, all blank space and flashing cursor. I'm hoping I can find my voice again and find my love for blogging.

About 10 years ago, I used to be big into Harry Potter and Doctor Who fandoms online - I loved making friends and chatting about the books/movies/shows and reading fanfiction. But then school, then college and then university took more and more of my free time and I fell out of fandom, lost touch with the people I used to talk to.

I'm now at the next stage of my life. I'm graduated with a BA in Sociology and Anthropology which I'm not using in my job as a Logistics Customer Service Administrator with a local recycling company. I do like feeling that I'm working somewhere that's helping make a difference though and that's something that's important to me. I've recently moved into my own flat and decided to dip my toe into online fandom again after falling in love with Aziraphale and Crowley in Good Omens. I'm also more than a little obsessed with all things Marvel - especially Iron Man & Robert Downey Jr ♥

I'm also trying to figure out who 'grown up' Evie is. I'm definitely a homebody - I much prefer being curled up on my couch reading, or watching TV or a movie, or reading a good book. I'm even thinking of getting a cat. Pretty sure I'm old way before my time! I love a rainy day with the [fake]fireplace on, a big mug of coffee and a book.

So that's me. Hi.
